The Age of the Yacht

As the world leaves the recession in the proverbial dust, the sale of luxury items are on the rise once again and yacht sales can be numbered among them. Few things spell out the distinction between luxury and necessity the way a beautifully crafted yacht does – while one means staying alive, the other means truly living and as the designs become increasingly daring, the rewards increase dramatically.

But where did it all begin? Which culture first embraced the beauty of these seafaring palaces and put their military vessels on the back foot? The original name was “jacht” or “jagt” which was the Dutch word for hunt or chase (quite similar to the Afrikaans), implying no small amount of speed in even these early vessels. Although the early designs were rediscovered and greatly advanced by the Dutch, the master seafaring civilisation that they were in the renaissance period, the early idea of these luxury vessels dates back much further.
